Design Guardianship - Construction Supervision for Landscape Projects
Site visits, contractor coordination and design oversight through construction. We make sure the landscape that is built matches the landscape that was designed.
A landscape design is only as good as the construction that follows. Stone is the wrong tone, plants arrive smaller than specified, copings are mitred badly, lighting beam angles point the wrong way - every project includes dozens of small decisions made on site that determine whether the finished landscape is excellent or merely passable. Design Guardianship is our optional service that puts the designer back on site through construction, ensuring that the intent of the design is preserved through every minor decision the contractor makes.
What Design Guardianship includes
- Periodic site visits during construction at agreed intervals or key milestones
- Material approvals - verifying samples and deliveries against the specification
- Construction quality reviews - joint widths, falls, levels, mortar tones, coping mitres
- Planting installation supervision - species verification, root ball quality, pit preparation
- Lighting fixture aiming and beam-angle adjustments on site
- Snagging and defect lists at substantial completion
- Written reports and photo records after each visit, addressed to client and contractor
Why clients commission this service
- The finished landscape actually matches the renderings and drawings
- Substitutions and value-engineering decisions are reviewed by the designer, not made unilaterally by the contractor
- Defects are caught early when they're cheap to fix, not after handover
- Plants survive their first year because installation was done correctly
- A documented record of decisions and approvals through construction

Why this service matters in Dubai
Dubai's construction market moves fast and has wide quality variance. Many landscape contractors are excellent; many are not; and on most projects you don't know which you have until the work is partly built. Design Guardianship is the simplest insurance policy against contractor-driven design erosion. The cost is small relative to the construction value; the impact on the finished result is large.
Guardianship is structured around your project programme. We typically agree a number of visits up-front (every two weeks during active landscape works is common) and adjust as the project progresses. This service is offered exclusively for landscapes designed by Plenerr.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you supervise a landscape designed by someone else?
No. Design Guardianship is offered only for landscapes that Plenerr has designed. Effective supervision requires authorship of the design - we need to know the intent behind every detail to defend it on site.
How is this different from contract administration?
Contract administration is a commercial/legal role, usually carried out by the project's lead consultant. Design Guardianship is a design role - verifying that what is built matches what was designed, not policing payment certificates or contract terms.
Do you produce reports after each site visit?
Yes. Every visit is documented with photographs, observations, decisions made on site, and any items requiring follow-up. Reports go to the client and the contractor in parallel.
